Ford Land Salvages Landfill for 1 Million Sq. Ft. Retail Center
Ford Land Development Corp., the Dearborn, Mich.-based real estate arm of Ford Motor Co., built Fairlane Green, a 1 million sq. ft. retail and recreation center, on the site of a closed landfill in Allen Park, Mich., as part of its sustainability program. The project converted the brownfield site into a productive new use that was 60% less dense than traditional retail centers, indicating that it offered considerably more open space. Fairlane Green earned LEED gold certification, and demonstrated innovative engineering techniques such as the use of a high-density, lightweight foam to seal the landfill as it accommodated the new construction. The company also used a three-dimensional survey to define elevations of the landfill.
