Sperry Van Ness named Tom Hershey national director of research for the company's new Research Group division. Hershey was formerly senior research analyst at Marcus & Millichap.

Sperry Van Ness also hired Rami Batarseh as a senior advisor. He will specialize in retail and multifamily properties in the San Francisco area.

The Macerich Co. named Melanie Balfour Heywood senior vice president of development. She is a specialist in retail development and mixed use. Heywood formerly served as director of the entertainment and retail group at Gensler Architecture, Planning & Design Worldwide.

Broker Calkain Cos. promoted David Sobelman to vice president from business development director to manage Calkain Realty Advisors, the firm's private markets division. Sobelman also will open new offices for the company starting with Tampa, Fla., this year.

San Diego-based real estate development and asset management firm Sudberry Properties Inc. hired Stephen Haase as vice president of development. He will assist with the company's entitlement process for retail and mixed-use projects. Haase was formerly the director of San Jose, Calif.'s Planning, Building and Code Enforcement Department.

Elmsford, N.Y.-based Wilder Balter Partners Inc. is developing the 850,000-square-foot Marketplace at Newburgh in Newburgh, N.Y. With construction scheduled to start late 2006, proposed tenants include Costco, JCPenney, Best Buy and Staples. The Marketplace will have a 200,000-square-foot lifestyle center and 650,000 square feet of big-box retail.
