ICSC's 2001 Spring Convention promises all of the great speakers, educational sessions and exhibitors that visitors expect. But this year, visitors can make the most of their time by attending multiple events on the same day.

The theme of the show is “Three in One in 2001 — The One for You.” That's because, for the first time in convention history, the leasing mall will open a day early, notes ICSC spokesman Malachy Kavanagh.

“What this means is on Monday at 9 a.m., the educational sessions, the trade show and the leasing mall are all going to run concurrently,” Kavanagh explains. “In the past we separated the events, but hopefully by compacting the show it will reduce costs for visitors.”

Amidst sessions dealing with suburban sprawl, public/private collaboration and sales tax collection over the Internet, ICSC has many guest speakers on tap to keep the show on a roll.

Founder and CEO of Crate and Barrel, Gordon Segal, will be speaking about the inception and growth of the company. Walter Cronkite, Doris Kearns Goodwin and Bill O'Reilly also will be speaking. “There will be a number of sessions that will be generated by industry professionals,” says Kavanagh. The convention is not the only thing being condensed. The ICSC spokesman believes the most important topic on everyone's mind this year will be consolidation of the industry.

“We're seeing some consolidation in the theatre industry and in the department store anchor end of the business,” Kavanagh notes. “So I think that will be on everybody's mind. The hot topic will be how to work your way through if a store closes.”


Top five tradeshow no-no's

No-no #1: Having no plan.

Use a planner to prepare an agenda you want to follow before you enter the hustle and bustle of the trade show floor. This preparation will allow you to prioritize the vendors you want to visit. Make sure you don't pack your schedule too tight in case you come across a booth where there is information you are interested in.

No-no #2: Losing track of time.

Before you enter a booth, know how you will approach the personnel. Be sure not to let them lead you in circles since this will eat up your time and interfere with your schedule. Another thing to remember is not everyone in the booth has the same level of expertise. If your questions aren't being answered thoroughly, or at all, speak to someone else.

No-no #3: Seminars & more seminars.

Seminars can be tricky. Be selective by asking yourself what you would like to learn, what you're hoping to get out of a seminar and if there are particular issues relevant to your field. If you are left with unanswered questions, speak up — you may be asking someone else's question, too. Seminars can be very beneficial if you know beforehand what you want to learn.

No-no #4: Being a party-pooper.

Don't skip the insignificant-sounding dinner gatherings, cocktail parties, or even early riser's breakfast engagements. These could be vital ways to gather information about competitors and current and future trends in your market. These occasions allow you the opportunity to brag a little about your own doings while storing away your competition's secrets to share with the office staff upon your return.

No-no #5: Packing your schedule.

You want to have a full schedule, but you don't want to have it so packed that you can't visit unexpected vendors if they pique your interest. Most likely, there will be new suppliers that are listed in the directory, which you can pick up after registering. These new suppliers may have resourceful and creative ideas, services and products worthy of investigating. Remember, though, your original top priority booths should stay that way. Just allow yourself time for the new booths if necessary.


Nine ways to make the most of your time

  1. Plan to attend.

  2. Rate the various purposes of your attendance in the order of their importance to you and your shopping center business.

  3. Check with vendors and suppliers to see what they offer to make attendance more rewarding.

  4. If possible, stay in the same hotel in which the trade show is being held. Commuting between a hotel and the site of the show can waste valuable time.

  5. Plot your strategy for each day of the event. What seminars do you want to attend? What exhibitors do you want to visit that day? Which after-hours events will you benefit from attending?

  6. Based on your strategy for each day, map your specific course. In other words, know which exhibitors you want to visit and plot a direct path. There will be time later to wander the show floor for more pointers, tips, new products and/or strategies.

  7. Incorporate your meals into your planning, whether it is brunch with a supplier-sponsored speaker or lunch on the meeting floor networking with fellow attendees.

  8. Remember that there is more to trade shows than floor exhibits. Seminars, demonstrations, new product introductions and even hospitality suites may make for long days, but they increase potential benefits to every shopping center owner, manager, developer, broker, designer and architect.

  9. Collect literature, take notes and gather business cards.
