Zen and the Art of Mall Maintenance

Californians partial to holistic rituals will love the redesign at Serramonte Center, owned by Capital & Counties in Daly City, near San Francisco. The 865,000 square foot, 35-year-old regional mall, anchored by Macy's and Target, spent $3.5 million to transform generic mall space into a Zen comfort zone, using Feng Shui to balance natural light, a stone koi water pond, bamboo landscapes and plush furniture.

“We wanted to have a mall that worked within the community, but importantly, wanted to make the atmosphere more comfortable for shoppers,” says Dick Bartlett, general manager. Serramonte re-opened on Nov. 14. In the Grand Court, martial artist Basilio Chen gave Tai Chi lessons during the holiday season.
