Northeast Ohio Medical University Breaks Ground on Residential Housing Development

AKRON, OHIO—Northeast Ohio Medical University has broken ground on its new, on-campus residential housing village in Akron, Ohio. SIGNET Development is serving as developer of the project.

As part of a long-term partnership, SIGNET will provide Northeast Ohio Medical University with development and finance services for the project, which includes the direction and oversight of all design, construction, finance and management activities.

The project is part of the university’s master expansion plan, which includes more than $130 million in construction for the Rootstown campus. When completed, the current construction projects will more than double the university’s existing 450,000-sq.-ft. campus.

To be comprised of 270,000 sq. ft. upon delivery, the project is the university’s first on-campus residential housing and will include the construction of three, four-story buildings to be located on the northwest corner of campus. The housing village will include private parking and paved walkways for easy access to existing campus facilities. There will be 185 units that will house approximately 340 residents.

Each one- and two-bedroom unit will be fully furnished with living room furniture, kitchen appliances and a washer and dryer. Private study areas as well as private bathrooms and personal closets are also planned.

The buildings will include group study areas on each floor, a large recreation area and a game room in the main building. In addition, each of the three buildings were designed and engineered to minimize sound transfer between units. The project will be available for lease to all students and the university community at large.

The project will be complete and ready for occupancy in the fall of 2013.

Northeast Ohio Medical University is a community-based, public medical university. With a focus on scientific and medical research, and the inter-professional training of health professionals, the university offers a doctor of medicine (M.D.) and a doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree, in addition to graduate-level coursework and research opportunities leading to master’s and doctoral degrees in other medical areas.
