Bloomberg Announces Big Plans for Brooklyn Cultural District

NEW YORK—Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg laid out plans for the development of the last city-owned parcels in Brooklyn’s cultural district Thursday. Those plans include a Gotham Organization and DT Salazar Inc.-led 600-unit housing development; a 50,000-sq.-ft. community space developed by Two Trees Management Company; and a forthcoming project for the last development parcel in the district as a result of a request for proposal sent by the City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.

“Downtown Brooklyn is one of the most exciting and dynamic neighborhoods in New York City or anywhere in the world, and today’s announcements are further confirmation of Downtown Brooklyn’s momentum,” Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Robert K. Steel said.

The Gotham Organization and DT Salazar plans include the development of 600 housing units, 50 percent of which will be affordable housing units and reserved for low-, moderate- and middle-income families. Upon completion, the building will contain approximately 515,000 sq. ft. of space and will also contain 20,000 sq. ft. of cultural and office space.

In November, Two Trees began the approval process to build a new mixed-use development on its Flatbush Avenue site. The 47,000-sq.-ft. lot will become the site for a new 32-story mixed-use facility designed by Enrique Norten of Ten Arquitectos. The development is slated to include approximately 50,000 sq. ft. of creative and cultural space. Ground-level retail and approximately 300 to 400 apartments are planned.

Downtown Brooklyn was rezoned in 2004. Since then, the city has committed more than $100 million in capital funding to support the development of the area.
