Mills Corp., YMCA granted approval to develop The Piers on San Francisco Bay

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Port Commission has granted The Mills Corp., Arlington, Va., exclusive negotiating rights for the development of 19 acres of waterfront piers on San Francisco Bay. Mills has formed a partnership with the YMCA of San Francisco to develop a 900,000 sq. ft., mixed-use recreation venue on Piers 27-31, situated along the northeast waterfront between Pier 39 and the Bay Bridge.

The project will include 300,000 sq. ft. of YMCA recreational facilities that will be open to the public; 150,000 sq. ft. of recreational retail and dining space; and 200,000 sq. ft. of Class-A office space. Also, The Mills and the YMCA will open the San Francisco Bay to the city of San Francisco by incorporating into the project a four-acre public plaza and 450,000 sq. ft. of open space, with bay steps leading to the water. Mills will meet with the Port to finalize plans for The Piers, which is scheduled to open in 2004.
