SANTA CLARA, CA—Nvidia has hired Gensler and SRGNC CRES LLC, a division of Sares Regis Group, to build a new office headquarters here, a one-million-sq.-ft. project that will cost a reported $300 million.

The technology firm’s current 12 building campus here totals one million sq. ft., but CEO Jen-Hsun Huang says in a statement that the company has enjoyed so much growth since its formation 20 years ago that an expansion is essential.

“Our headquarters in Santa Clara, just a few blocks from where we started, barely has a spare desk. We’re absolutely bursting at the seams,” she says. “So, we’ve decided to build a new campus right across the street, one as distinctive as our company.”

The development site is situated on the south side of a 24-acre parcel, purchased by NVIDIA in 2008. The property is located west of San Tomas Expressway and bordered by Central Expressway and Walsh Avenue. Phase 1 of the project anticipates constructing a single 500,000 sq. ft. building, beginning in June 2013, with two levels of office and lab space, accommodating up to 2,500 people. Phase 2 will occur when NVIDIA’s growth requires it, according to a Sares statement.

“We are excited to develop an inspiring and productive workplace for NVIDIA,” says Jeff Birdwell, president of commercial development at SRGNC. “Our specialized team is committed to incorporating innovation and high energy into the work environment to reflect NVIDIA’s collaborative, energetic culture.”

SRGNC will oversee the project and Gensler will serve as the project architect. Webcor will serve as the general contractor. Other members of the development team will be determined soon. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2013 with projected occupancy in May 2015, according to the Sares statement.
