New developments Miami Beach, Fla. - Locally based Equity One Inc. has been given the green light to proceed with its plans to develop The Point at North Beach in Miami Beach. The development will turn what is currently a city-owned parking lot into a 180,000 sq. ft. retail and entertainment center.
Anchored by a 51,000 sq. ft. Publix, the project also will include an 80,000 sq. ft. multiplex movie theater, a 12,000 sq. ft. "black box" theater for live productions, 35,000 sq. ft. of retail and restaurant space, and a 900-space parking garage. Groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for April 2001 with completion slated for November 2002.
Crofton, Md. - The first phase of The Village at Waugh Chapel in Crofton, Md., is expected to open next month. Encompassing 160,000 sq. ft. of retail space, it will feature Safeway supermarket, Rite Aid, Dress Barn, Blockbuster Video, Robert Andrew Day Spa, Waugh Chapel Wine & Spirits, Supreme Cleaners and a number of restaurants.
Upon total build-out in mid 2002, The Village will contain 425,000 sq. ft. of retail space, 325 to 350 senior housing units, a recreation complex, and a 45,000 sq. ft. office building, all arranged around a 3.5-acre, two-tiered lake. The office building and The Village Commons, a 94,000 sq. ft. upscale, specialty retail component, are scheduled to get under way in late fall.
The Village at Waugh Chapel is being built around a town square concept. Its design blends the unique atmosphere and easy pace of a 19th century country village with the latest services and conveniences to complement today's busy lifestyle. It is a development of Baltimore-based Erwin L. Greenberg Commercial Corp. The Martin Architectural Group, Philadelphia, and The Tech Group, Annapolis, Md., are spearheading the project's design.
Cincinnati - Locally based North America Properties has three new developments under way. In Atlanta, Stonecrest Marketplace is a 450,000 sq. ft. power center located adjacent to the planned Mall at Stonecrest. It is scheduled to open with the mall in fall 2001. In Mankato, Minn., the company is developing another power center named Mankato Marketplace. Anchored by Kohl's and Wal-Mart, it features 350,000 sq. ft. and will open in spring 2001. And in Naples, Fla., North American Properties has begun work on Phase II of its 150,000 sq. ft. Naples Walk project. Anchored by Publix, it is expected to open in September.
Woodridge, Ill. - Preliminary work is under way on the retail component of Seven Bridges, a 400-acre planned community development in Woodridge, a western suburb of.
Considered the project's final phase, it will include approximately 200,000 sq. ft. of retail space, a number of restaurants, a hotel and offices at the north end of the site. The timetable for the phase hinges on locating a retail developer or joint partner, according to the community developer, Chicago-based Seven Bridges Development.
Seven Bridges is positioned as a family destination for sports/entertainment and retail. The site already includes a three-rink ice arena, a 16-screen cinema and 3-D IMAX theater, a 105,000 sq. ft. health and fitness facility, a banquet/conference center, a golf course and various restaurants.
Major tenant happenings Clovis, N.M. - Work is under way to add Dillard's department store to the anchor lineup at North Plains Mall in Clovis. Scheduled to open for the back-to-school season, the 70,000 sq. ft. store will be Dillard's sixth in the state. North Plains Mall is a 288,460 sq. ft. center currently anchored by Beall's, JCPenney and Sears. The center is owned by Salt Lake City-based JP Realty Inc.
Birmingham, Ala. - Academy Sports and Outdoors is making plans to anchor Colonial Promenade Tutwiler Farm, a new neighborhood shopping center being developed in Birmingham. The Katy, Texas-based retailer joins Target, Home Depot, Bed Bath & Beyond, T.J. Maxx, Books-A-Million and Michaels in the 516,000 sq. ft. center. A project of locally based Colonial Properties Trust, Colonial Promenade Tutwiler Farm is expected tobe completed this fall.
Scottsdale, Ariz. - Kierland Commons, a 450,000 sq. ft. development in Scottsdale, has landed Chicago-based Crate & Barrel following an agreement to reconfigure a primary building that will allow the retailer to present its newest store and product layout.
The two-level, 36,000 sq. ft. store will mark the entrance to the development, which also features tenants such as Anthropologie, Artafax, Briggs & Riley, Lucky Brand, Restoration Hardware, Smith & Hawken and Z Gallerie. Crate & Barrel and several other stores are expected to open in late summer with the center's grand opening planned for October.
Kierland Commons is a development of Woodbine Southwest Corp., a subsidiary of-based Woodbine Development Corp., and locally based Herberger Interests.
Niles, Ill. - National grocery chain Cub Foods recently opened a store at Pointe Plaza, a new 335,000 sq. ft. shopping center in Niles. The 58,000 sq. ft. location represents a new concept for the retailer.
In a bid to shed its warehouse image, Cub Foods is building stores that offer full-service grocery store conveniences with more freshly prepared food and improved services.
Cub Foods joins Wal-Mart, Babies 'R' Us, Office Depot, Starbucks, Bennigan's, Wolf Camera, Dress Barn, The Bedding Experts, Great China Buffet and Superstand in the center, which is owned by Highland Park, Ill.-based Tucker Development Corp.
Exton, Pa. - A new look was unveiled in May at Exton Square in Exton after a $130 million expansion and renovation project. Three new department stores, 80 new specialty stores and a new food court were added, more than doubling the size of the mall from 435,000 sq. ft. to 980,000 sq. ft.
The renovation added new store space atop the original one-level section of the center and a ceiling of skylights. Other work involved more parking spaces, two new entrances and remodeled public facilities. The center is owned by Exton Square Inc., an affiliate of The Rouse Co., Columbia, Md.
