ST. PETERSBURG, FL– University Housing Services, Inc., announced today the development of its fourth student housing project in Savannah, Georgia. The addition of The Hue, located on the corner of W. Bay and Warner Streets, brings UHS’ total number of Savannah student housing beds developed to more than 2,100. Nationwide, the firm has developed well over 20,000 beds during its 20-year history.
The Hue will be the first new fully amenitized purpose-built student housing development in the area.
The 2.1-acre property will consist of 446 beds in 145 one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments and four three-bedroom townhouses, along with resort-style pool, 24-hour clubhouse, full-fitness center and 3,700 square feet of retail. In addition, there will be a two-level, 320-space parking garage, including 13 visitor parking spaces.
Within walking distance to most Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) downtown facilities and other points of interest, The Hue is aimed at SCAD’s steadily increasing student base experienced over the last 10 years. This past school year, total SCAD enrollment increased 3.2 percent, with the Savannah campus reaching about 8,500 students.
Savannah offers an abundance of studio apartments, houses and townhomes for college students to rent in and around the Historic Downtown District. But, according to UHS’ President & CEO, Greg Minder, for those students looking for an alternative to smaller, older apartments, The Hue will give them the latest features and amenities currently not available in the marketplace.
“The Hue fills the gap in the off-campus student housing marketplace by providing a more modern, secure and amenity-filled lifestyle,” said Minder.
Each furnished unit will feature vinyl wood plank flooring, granite countertops, GE Silver Series appliances and a full-sized washer and dryer.
Another unique feature of The Hue is it offers a backdrop of the Savannah River and the Talmadge Memorial Bridge, a cable-stayed bridge that spans between downtown and Hutchinson Island.
Understanding the importance of designing a building that is modern yet respects the look and feel of Savannah’s Westside industrial buildings, such as the Georgia Port Authority’s Ocean Terminal, UHS teamed with locally based Lott + Barber Architects.
“Lott+Barber has a keen awareness and respect for preserving Savannah’s charm and character,” said Minder. “We believe The Hue’s urban loft design that successfully blends two architectural styles and its proximity to SCAD and downtown entertainment will make it the premier student living community in the Savannah area.”
The Hue will be completed before the Fall 2014 school year.
Top-ranking student housing general contractor, Juneau Construction Company, is the general contractor, and the owner is Stonemont Financial Group. Both firms are based in Atlanta.
UHS’ other Savannah student housing projects were for the Savannah College of Art and Design and all three phases of housing at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
