And you thought all the action was in Dubai. In Abu Dhabi, the capital city of United Arab Emirates, Sorough Real Estate is transforming Reem Island into a miniature Manhattan at a projected cost of $2.7 billion. The so-called Shams Abu Dhabi project will comprise 82 million square feet of mixed-use space; 90 percent devoted to 22,000 residences. The island will be divided into themed neighborhoods linked by waterways, and Sorough will open up individual housing blocs for other companies to develop according to a master plan. Notable names among the architects include Miami-based Arquitectonica and Perkins + Will. Buildings will range from three stories tall to 83 floors, the height of Sky Tower, the first building scheduled for construction and the tallest in Abu Dhabi.
