Six states, namely Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma, Massachusetts and Kansas have not yet returned to the level of economic activity they posted before the 2001 recession. The Midwest states have suffered as economic activity has shifted to Western states, which have achieved great growth since the recession. Massachusetts, on the other hand, looks poor because the period it is compared with, the late 1990s, was such a boon for the state.
