CHICAGO—The United Way of Metropolitan Chicago is moving its headquarters a few blocks east in the downtown here, and plans to downsize to about half of the 58,000 sq. ft. it currently occupies at 560 W. Lake.
The non-profit said it agreed to lease almost 30,000 sq. ft. at the 1.2-million-sq.-ft. 333 S. Wabash, known as the CNA Center, with a move into the 30th floor planned in May 2013. Wendy DuBoe, president and CEO, said in a statement that the consolidation will result in a more efficient workspace. Her organization reportedly sold its share of its current building for $5.3 million.
“The sale of our building places us in a much better long-term financial position,” she said. “This, along with transitioning into more productive work space with attractive terms, enables us to continue to make the maximum investments in education, income and health programs across more than 40 communities of greatest need. CNA is an ideal partner for us as they share a passion for meeting the needs of Chicagoland children and families.”
The CNA Financial Corp. owns the famous red-painted 44-story building. The company launched a $63.7 million renovation program in 2005, when it decided to lease out portions of the building to other tenants. The tower is almost completely full.
