CHICAGO—Planet Fitness announced Tuesday that it plans to open more than 10 new gyms in the city by 2015.
The company just opened its largest facility, a 40,000-sq.-ft. gym, in the Avondale neighborhood here. The firm, based in Newington, N.H., has more than 620 locations nationwide.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement that this expansion is an excellent example of the kind of growth he is committed to supporting in Chicago. “We are working aggressively to ensure Chicagoans in every neighborhood to have access to affordable and convenient options to help them stay healthy, from eliminating food deserts to increasing access to parks, and Planet Fitness’ growth is a great step towards that goal,” the mayor said.
In the last two years, Planet Fitness invested $25 million to develop and open 12 facilities across Cook County. The company plans to construct at least 10 more Planet Fitness locations within the next two years in Chicago. The upcoming projects include gyms in the Chatham Market and Stony Island.
