Fort Lauderdale -- Broward County might buy the nearly vacant Northport Marketplace mall at the end of the month, according to a report in the The Florida Sun Sentinal.
The newspaper reports that creditors for the Fort Lauderdale mall -- which will likely be auctioned Jan. 31 -- have set an undisclosed minimum price that bidders must meet before the mall will be sold. Broward County previously owned the 100,000-sq.-ft. center but lost control of it six years ago because of a flaw in the lease, the newspaper reports. Located on an attractive piece of real estate along the 17th Street Causeway, the center likely will sell for millions of dollars.
Northport Marketplace once included a Planet Hollywood franchise and several other restaurants and nightclubs. According to the Sun-Sentinal, road construction, strong nearby competition, and a failure to lease-up the property led to its demise.
