Denver – Same-store retail sales for May rose 2.8% over the same period last year, according to data compiled by TeleCheck Services Inc., a subsidiary of locally based First Data Corp. The Southwest region led the nation in retail sales, followed by the Southeast and the Mid-Atlantic, which were tied, the Midwest, the West and the Northeast.
The TeleCheck Retail Index is based on a year-over-year, same-store comparison of the dollar volume of checks written by consumers at more than 27,000 of TeleCheck’s 272,000 subscribing locations. According to the company, checks account for nearly one-third of retail spending and remain second to cash as the most popular method of payment.
