With a continuing focus on the company's four major merchandising categories, a series of "habitats" was developed for: Home and office, health and fitness, lawn and garden, travel and auto. Each zone is designed as a "store-in-store" area to draw customers to key categories. These habitats are anchored by rich cherry bentwood canopies and differentiated by the visual merchandising of the products' uniquely colored brand packaging. Signage is suspended from a metallic frame, where lettering hovers on a rippled art glass panel visible from outside and inside the store. The new front rotunda allows for more flexible reinvention and inclusion of product, demonstrations and graphics. Flanking the entrance are key item zones. The wall fixtures, enhanced by under-lit polycarbonate shelving trimmed with an aluminum angled edge, highlight products on display blending classic timelessness and high-tech. The new curved cash wrap zone reflects the same industrial character of the store and is highlighted by a plasma screen that communicates the retailer's role as a cataloguer, Internet retailer and physical store.
A major update in the prototype is the creation of a new habitat for the Temperpedic "sleep shop" located at the rear of the store. The shop brings together related products in the sleep category, providing a more private area to test mattresses and pillows.
