A building that was a shopping destination in downtown Cleveland as far back as the 1890s will be converted into a 294-room Hyatt Regency hotel. In a partnership between Chicago-based LR Development and Chicago-based Hyatt Hotels Corp., the former Arcade building, which was one of the first 10 buildings to be placed on the National Historic Register, will open in spring 2001 following a $60 million renovation.
The hotel will occupy two nine-story towers connected by a five-story concourse containing an atrium and 55,000 sq. ft. of retail space.
The project will restore the building's 300-foot-long steel and glass ceiling, brass street lamps, the arched entrance and ornamental details, including 40 sculptured griffin heads.
Guestrooms will overlook the retail boutiques in the atrium. Cleveland-based Marous Brothers is the general contractor and Sandvick Architects, also of Cleveland, is designing the restoration project.
