FIELD PAOLI ARCHITECTS DRAEGER'S MARKETPLACE * San Mateo, Calif. In the category of New Specialty Stores (over 5,000 sq. ft.), Field Paoli Architects, San Francisco, received an Honorable Mention for its design of Draeger's Marketplace in San Mateo, Calif.
The mission: Create a new downtown shopping destination. The two-story market hall, overflowing with gourmet foods, fresh-cut flowers, cookware, a coffee bar and bakery, is just that.
The ground level includes traditional grocery store departments, a sushi bar, and a cheese department complete with its own custom-designed aging chamber. Custom lighting, banners and maple columns throughout set the tone of the upscale market.
The wine-tasting room, a perk for preferred customers, offers a haven of good taste from the bustling sales floor. Tucked under the escalator, the room is fitted with maple, steel and granite.
Departments offering different products, placed off the main entry, with its terra-cotta stucco, large wood overhangs and barrel-vaulted ceiling, echo the lively streetscape of Draeger's Marketplace.
A 120-seat restaurant, featuring a stone fireplace and exhibition cooking area, rounds out the store's offerings.
