One panelist remarked, “I've never been in a grocery store that elegant.” Another: “They managed to turn food into fashion.” When Pavlik Design Team was commissioned by Galleria Department Store to remodel its basement supermarket, it looked to the luxury brands upstairs for a benchmark. Judges remarked that Pavlik's showcases for food seemed to be suited to jewelry, and they were impressed by the warmth of the space's organic color palette and the intimacy of chandeliers. Pavlik eschewed typical wayfinding signage in favor of dropped wood ceilings and artwork that guide customers to unique zones. In this most highly contested SADI category, the jury voted in favor of a project that reinforced brand message while redefining a tired typography.
