Macy's at Mall at Millennia

To many of the judges, executing this project alone deserved a distinguished nod. Department stores have fallen short of creating new and innovative designs for their mammoth buildings, so judges are hoping that Cooper Carry & Associates' design of Macy's Orlando store will give developers something to strive for. The exterior of this three-story building is highlighted by broad horizontal bands and niches, golden metal panels, glass and a storefront framing system that enhances the geometrical shape. Large oak trees ring the site, and plant-filled pedestrian zones provide warm entries. “This was well-detailed, a stellar example of what this type of department store can give as a visual,” says James Ryan of JPRA Architects.
