History repeats Tampa, Fla.'s Citrus Park takes shoppers back to the golden age of retail, breaking the mall mold by creating the traditional shopping streets of a true town center within a single-level enclosed center. Also in the category of New Enclosed Centers, RTKL Associates Inc., Dallas, was awarded the 2000 SADI for its design work on the development.
RTKL drew inspiration from the classic American Main Street, creating individual building facades on each tenant space. These feature the type of materials, ornamentation, signage and awnings found in actual downtown retail buildings. Key tenants also have access and visibility on the exterior, where they flank mall entrances.
White draped ceilings, suggestive of fabric awnings, are suspended over the "streets," while natural light pours through clerestory windows. RTKL's ID8 division created billboard imagery, derived from historic photographs of Tampa, that occur above the "buildings."
A German limestone floor, wood benches, outdoor landscaping and streetlights further define each interior street, while banners above identify West Main Street, East Main Street, Citrus Boulevard and the department store avenues. The food court, called Quickfood Cafes, is a whimsical spoof of small town diners, with artwork inspired by that of pop artist Roy Lichtenstein.
