Located in Boston's landmark Paine Furniture Building, Montage's design reflects the store's classic and contemporary furniture. To call attention to the wide space and multiple levels, Elkus/Manfredi put a 14-foot wide steel staircase in the middle of the main level. It's finished with a shimmering 27-foot high nickel chain that cascades to the basement selling floor. Judges were awestruck by the practical use of this centerpiece, calling it a “great visual line that enhances the furniture products.” With soft track lighting and tall white columns that contrast with the black-stained oak floors, the colorful furniture pieces stand out. “While simple, this project works on all levels,” says Jay Valgora, of WalkerGroup/CNI. “The architecture, materials and lighting were very well executed.”
