From the custom-designed, handblown glass chandeliers and light fixtures from Spain and Germany to the asymmetrical “ribs” in the ceiling, Mills Corp.'s 1.4 million-square-foot Madrid Xanadú was designed by Kiku Obata & Co. as a European-inspired architectural wonder with eye-popping graphics, imagery and ornamentation. The architects used playful colors and wall art to change the “mood” at different locations. Marble floors provide one area with a feeling of calm. In another, a yellow and red bull's-eye design sweeps a cone-shaped skylight. Jack Gatto, president of Carroll Associates Architects, says the center has a “unique introduction of sunlight with bold shapes and [successfully] draws on indigenous architecture.”
