Wal-Mart Growth Heavy on Small-Format Stores

After facing a few hurdles in developing its small-format units, Wal-Mart is reporting its Neighborhood Market and Express locations are taking market share away from dollar stores, supermarkets and drugstores, according to The Wall Street Journal.

As a result, in the current fiscal year, approximately 40 percent of Wal-Mart's new store openings will be in the small-format category. According to Bill Simon, who heads Wal-Mart's U.S. division:

"We can deliver price, and assortment and fresh food and Rx," suggesting that rivals like dollar stores come up lacking.
