Houston oil-boom building to house Marriott hotels

A $70 million redevelopment will convert the former Humble Oil Building in downtown Houston into a 191-room Courtyard by Marriott and a 171-room Residence Inn by Marriott. The redevelopment of the building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is a partnership between New Orleans-based Historic Restoration Inc. and Housing Horizons LLC, a division of Dallas-based Kimberly-Clark Corp., a company that specializes in tax-credit real estate projects.

The Courtyard will be housed in the original Humble Oil Building completed in 1921, while the Residence Inn will occupy a wing added to the complex in 1940. The two hotels are licensed by Washington, D.C.-based Marriott International. The project, scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2001, also includes 82 luxury apartment homes and 6,000 sq. ft. of retail space. The redevelopment of the 472,000 sq. ft. building is part of a revitalization effort in downtown Houston.
