George Washington School Readies for Opening

NEW JERSEY—George Washington School in Edgewater will open for classes later this month after two years of construction. Designed by Di Cara/Rubino Architects, the 103,000-sq.-ft., $25 million project included demolition and construction within a densely populated area. The school will serve as a second school for the district, meeting its growing student population.

The new George Washington School has 20 classrooms, small group instruction rooms, a self‐contained special education room, music and art rooms, multi‐purpose room and administrative areas. In addition, there is an interactive learning room located on the school’s third floor.

Externally, the school has a façade that fits in with its surrounding residential neighborhood, a playground area, an outdoor amphitheater, new perimeter fencing and two parking lots, as well as an underground garage. Additionally, the new school was designed to LEED‐Certified standards, and contains numerous sustainable design elements.

Originally built in 1928, the George Washington School will house grades pre-K through grade 2.
