IRVINE, CA – Commercial construction is on the rise as Southland real estate markets continue to show improvement, with R.D. Olson Construction announcing several new projects in Los Angeles County, including one on Catalina Island. The increased construction activity has accelerated the growth curve for the Irvine, Calif.-based general contractor, resulting in the promotion of three project executives as the c ompany takes on more and more new projects.
In Westwood, Calif., R.D. Olson is under construction on a five-story multi-family project at 11024 Strathmore for Texas-based Phoenix Properties. Designed by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects, the contemporary 31-unit podium-style project will be built above two levels of parking.
R.D. Olson Construction was also selected by Long Wharf Real Estate Partners to refresh the Sheraton Gateway Los Angeles Hotel at Los Angeles International Airport. Plans call for the renovation of the ballroom, pre-function area, multipurpose room and meeting facilities, and will require R. D. Olson to work around various functions while the hotel operates at 98 percent occupancy.
Los Angeles-based Channel West Group also enlisted R.D. Olson to convert the Courtyard by Marriott in Marina del Rey, Calif. to a Doubletree by Hilton. The project will be renamed Hotel MdR and includes renovations to the exterior facade, lobby, restaurant, pool deck, guestrooms and suites. The hotel will remain open throughout construction.
Additionally, R.D. Olson Construction has been awarded the pre-construction and construction service contracts to build a new 14,000-square-foot banquet facility at Catalina Island’s Descanso Beach Club. The island location and lack of a supply house poses interesting challenges in the procurement of equipment and materials, and requires the workforce to travel to the island in weekly shifts.
The increase in construction contracts is accompanied by the promotion of three project executives: Matthew Grubb, Tommy Marcum and John Ramirez. “John, Matt and Tommy each exhibit the breadth of experience, talent and focused energy that is crucial to the role of project executive,” said Bob Olson, founder and chief executive officer of R.D.
