CHICAGO – The Thornton Tomasetti board of directors and managing principals announce the promotion of Helen Torres, S.E., LEED AP BD+C, to vice president in the Chicago office of the international engineering firm.
Ms. Torres has more than 20 years of experience in structural design for new buildings and renovations of existing structures and has been with the firm 12 years. Her varied project experience includes education facilities, laboratories and hospitals, performing arts venues, libraries, and residential and commercial buildings.Recent projects include the Advanced Protein Crystallization Facility at Argonne National Laboratory, the William Eckhardt Research Center at the University of Chicago and a data center expansion.
Ms. Torres is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and leads the Chicago office’s participation in the City of Chicago’s Green Office Challenge. In 2009, she presented in a Council of American Structural Engineers (CASE) Summer Workshop entitled “How Can Structural Firms Benefit by Understanding Sustainable Design?” She also leads the firm’s mission critical market sector and coordinates the summer intern program for the Chicago office.
She is a licensed structural engineer in Illinois and a LEED Accredited Professional in Building Design and Construction. She holds a bachelor’s degree in architecture in structures from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
