Honorable Mention - Adaptive Reuse of a Big-Box Space
With Richmond Centre Dining Terrace in Richmond, British Columbia, the design team’s goal was to create a modern, urban, environmentally conscious space. The Dining Terrace is located on the upper level of a former multiplex cinema and the developer wanted to evoke a restaurant quality setting to take the mall dining experience to a new level.
The Dining Terrace was constructed with a lightweight, built-up floor structure of plywood and steel deck to flatten the once-sloped theatre ceiling. A structural steel grid, spanning between the roof columns, simplified the installation of ceilings and allowed for support of ceiling hung restaurant equipment.
The design team used the principles of Feng Shui to honor the beliefs of a large portion of Richmond’s population. The Feng Shui philosophy orients buildings and interior spaces based on local natural features, such as bodies of water and the stars, to achieve spiritual harmony.
In adherence to Cadillac Fairview’s Green initiatives program, the designers used recycled indigenous wood from Vancouver Island and recycled chairs made from PET bottles for the Dining Terrace. To preserve natural light throughout the space, seven LED skylights were positioned throughout the terrace. The skylights have been equipped with daylight intensity LED cove lights to mimic natural light on the frequently grey West Coast days.
