Supermarket News reports that the German supermarket operator will significantly ramp up its store openings in the U.S., from 80 new stores a year to 130 new stores a year for the next five years. The move will help Aldi grow its U.S. portfolio by 50 percent by 2018. The chain, which recently entered the Houston market and expanded in South Florida and New York City, will also open new locations in Southern California. Aldi currently operates approximately 1,300 stores stateside.
