To help revive sagging attendance at the Grand Lake Theater in Oakland, the owners have decided to dole out free popcorn (including refills) on Mondays through Thursdays with the price of admission.

The theater has lost ground to some upscale megaplexes nearby, including the Emerybay 10 in Emeryville. “It's getting harder and harder for the old theaters to compete with the megaplexes. They won't survive unless they are supported by the movie-going community,” the theater's owner told the Alameda Times-Star.
