`Smart growth' units to be near D.C. Metro station

A joint venture of The Holladay Corp. and The John Akridge Cos., both of Washington, D.C., has plans to develop an 11-story, mixed-use project in Arlington County, Va., featuring 250 apartments. The building, which has yet to be named, will also have 14,000 sq. ft. of retail space. Construction is scheduled to begin in mid-winter 2001 and will take approximately 17 months to complete. The Washington, D.C. office of Cleveland-based Dorsky Hodgson + Partners is designing the project.

The units will average about 1,000 sq. ft. in size. The project, to be located approximately 600 feet from the Clarendon Metro Station, will also feature a 5,000 sq. ft., triangular-shaped plaza with a 35-foot clock tower.
