The 2001 top contractors survey ranks retail contractors by interior and shell space completed in the past five years, as well as by square footage under construction. In compiling the rankings, Shopping Center World's research department reviewed detailed surveys submitted by 112 contractors.

Not long after last year's survey was published, the economy slowed. It remains sluggish, but projects are still in the pipeline. Last year, for example, Fisher Development reported 960,469 sq. ft. under construction. This year, Fisher has 1.8 million sq. ft. in the works. So, despite bad economic news, retail continues to grow. The 2001 survey shows 10 different contractors working with The Home Depot, for example. Other active clients include Sears, Wal-Mart, Target and Lowe's.

Other findings from the survey:

  • Shell space built from April 1, 1996, through March 31, 2001, ranges from 13,000 to 24.8 million sq. ft., with an average of 4.5 million;

  • Shell space built from January 1 to December 31, 2000, ranges from 10,000 to 6.4 million sq. ft., with an average of 1.1 million;

  • Interior space built from April 1, 1996, to March 31, 2001, ranges from 61,000 to 36.6 million sq. ft., with an average of 5.4 million;

  • Interior space built from January 1 to Dec. 31, 2000, ranges from 12,200 to 11.8 million sq. ft., with an average of 1.3 million;

  • Space currently under construction ranges from 15,500 to 10.6 million sq. ft., with an average of 1 million.

  • Percent of business that is retail ranges from .1% to 100%, with an average of 61%.
